Joachim Stutschewsky, cellist and composer, author of numerous music transcriptions, promoter of Jewish music. Born on 7th February 1891 in Romny (then in the Russian Empire, now Ukraine), into a family with long-time musical traditions, Stutschewsky was brought up in the environment of Jewish klezmer musicians playing at weddings and inns. In this social context, his musical education started at age five with learning the violin, from which he eventually shifted to the cello. He played this instrument, among others, in the band led by his father, klezmer-clarinettist Kalmen-Lejb Stuczewski.

In 1909–1911, Stutschewsky studied at Leipzig Conservatory in the class of Julius Klengel, an outstanding instrumentalist (who shared the stage with such celebrities as Leopold Auer and Adolph Brodsky), but also a composer and educator. Klengel’s pupils included the world’s top cellists of that time, such as Emanuel Feuermann, Gregor Piatigorsky, Guilhermina Suggia, as well as Henryk Adamus and Dezyderiusz Danczowski, who was one of the fathers of the Polish cello scene. …
