They may be called “sonatas”, but they’re more like string symphonies. These are very enjoyable, in the “comfortable old slippers” vein: light, tuneful, easy to take. Neville Marriner and the ASMF are masters of this kind of material, and the 1960’s recordings sound great. The other works by Donizetti, Cherubini, and Bellini fit in just fine, helping to fill the 2-disc set to make for good value.
